Farol da Barra

Lighthouse of Barra de Aveiro

The Barra Lighthouse is the highest lighthouse in Portugal. It is located on the beach of Barra, parish of Gafanha da Nazaré, municipality of Ílhavo, district of Aveiro. With a height of 62 metres, it is currently the second largest in the Iberian Peninsula, and it is included in the 26 largest in the world, rising 66 metres above sea level. Built in the 19th century, more precisely between the years 1885 and 1893, with a spiral (snail-like) staircase consisting of 288 steps made of stone, it provides, for those who "venture" to climb to its summit balcony, a magnificent and dazzling view of the surrounding área.

Art Nouveau architecture

Distinguished as the art-museum of Art Nouveau in Portugal, Aveiro is a member of the "Réseau Art Nouveau Network" alongside Barcelona, Brussels, Budapest, Glasgow, Helsinki and Havana.
This delicate and seductive period of 20th-century art can be found in a series of interesting examples of two-story buildings representative of the exuberant decorative taste characteristic of the Art Nouveau style.

There are 10 Art Nouveau buildings in Aveiro. They are:
Casa do Major Pessoa; building of the Casa do Rossio; Casa dos Ovos Moles; Museum of the Republic; Cooperativa Agrícola building; Restaurant - Pensão Ferro; building of the Residence of the Architect Silva Rocha; "As Américas" Hotel Bar building; Building of the Shoe Shop Miguéis; Bandstand of the Municipal Park Infante D. Pedro.

Ethnographic Museum Rancho Regional House of the People of Ílhavo

The “Rancho Regional da Casa do Povo” of Ilhavo was founded in 1984 with the purpose of reviving the folklore dances and songs, the customs and habits of the people of Ilhavo, collecting, preserving and bringing to light the popular culture of Ilhavo.
Since 2009, this cultural association has been promoting its Ethnographic Museum in the old Primary School of Boavista.

Classified as a Property of Public Interest, the monumental complex of Bussaco mobilizes an exceptional heritage wealth.
To the central nucleus formed by the Palace Hotel of Bussaco and by the Convent of Santa Cruz are added the housing hermitages, the chapels of devotion and the Steps that make up the Via Sacra, the Fence with the Doors, the Military Museum and the commemorative monument of the The Battle of Bussaco, the wayside crosses, the fountains (of which the Fonte Fria with its monumental staircase stands out) and the cisterns, the miradouros (the one of Cruz Alta offers a privileged view of all the region between Coimbra and the Caramulo range) or the forest guard houses.

The biodiversity found in Bussaco expresses the patrimonial singularity and value of this magical legacy and compels its preservation.

The Lugar dos Afetos, deeply innovative, was thought and built to accommodate several thematic houses, paths, gardens and unique nooks and crannies.

Graça Gonçalves, the author of the whole project, conceived even the smallest details of the exterior and interior architecture. Coherently, the tinniest detail has significance.

Comur Museum

In this Museum one can get to know the history of the factory and the community, in which it is inserted, observing the development of the canning process and its phases.
Here we learn how the specific characteristics of Murtosa and the Ria gave rise to this factory, how its workers operated, and about the complete canning process from the arrival of the fish to the expedition of the canned product.

This is an innovative, multidisciplinary museum in which Murtosa, the Ria (estuary), the sea, work, industry, advertising and gastronomy coexist and interact.

The Sea

The Sea

More than a thousand years ago, the region of Aveiro was a bay. There was a beach where today is the river that marks the landscape of the region. Centuries of sediment, brought by the river Douro into the sea, have been accumulated along the coast, helping to build the sand languages and the current ecosystem.

The roughness of the see waves that hit the coast contrast with the calm waters of the Ria

Along the beach, the landscape changes radically, providing the possibility of entering into direct contact with a complex ecosystem, fragile and at the same time fascinating.
Here, the dune landscape is undoubtedly the protagonist: the wonderful balance between the action of the winds and the tenacity of the numerous species of plants have shaped this coast for centuries.

Aveiro

Aveiro is a city on the Portuguese west coast founded next to a lagoon known as Ria de Aveiro.

It is distinguished by its canals navigated by colorful boats (moliceiros boats), traditionally used for the harvest of algae.

Aveiro was always linked to the sea trade, fishing and salt production.

The region of Aveiro, 'shaped' by the presence of water, is one of the most beautiful in Portugal

Ílhavo

The Costa Nova beach, former libris of the region, is one of the excellent Portuguese beaches for the practice of water sports, since, besides the Atlantic front, it also has a riverside front for the Mira Canal of Ria de Aveiro.

Their houses, known as "palheiros", of vertical or horizontal polychromatic lists, are old warehouses of fishing gear, or fish salting warehouses, that at the moment are converted into bathing residences.

Here there are many good restaurants, specializing in cod, fresh fish - grilled or in caldeiradas and still seafood from the Ria de Aveiro.

The Ria

The Ria (delta)

The ria is the result of the retreat of the sea, with the formation of coastal cords that, from the 16th century, formed a lagoon that constitutes one of the most important and beautiful geographical accidents of the Portuguese coast.

In total, the whole estuary covers eleven thousand hectares, of which six thousand are permanently flooded, unfolds in four important branching channels in stems that surround numerous islands and islets. In it, the Vouga, Antuã, Jardim, Boco and Fontão rivers flow, having as only communication with the sea a channel that cuts the coastline between Barra and São Jacinto, allowing access to the port of Aveiro of large draft vessels.

Rich in fish and waterfowl, it features large water plans, places of choice for practicing all water sports. Moreover, although it has been losing from year to year, the importance it has already had in the economy of Aveiro, the production of salt, using millennial techniques, is still one of the most characteristic traditional activities of the city of Aveiro.

Widely used for touristic purposes, it offers an unique and privileged contact with Nature
